Case Studies

Working as part of an integrated system, NMSI and its employees and project partners have together delivered a number of successful CSR projects that leverage their skills and experience to delivering tangible benefits to local communities.

Renovation of inner city primary school

NMSI led a team of employees and volunteers on a CSR project to renovate the Noyaa Academy in Jamestown, Accra, which provides basic education as a gateway into mainstream education for children who would otherwise not receive any formal education in one of the most deprived inner city areas in Africa.

The school’s roof had numerous holes meaning that, during the rainy season, classes were severely interrupted due to flooding, while the children’s school books and food were being destroyed. The roof was replaced; new guttering was added in order to channel run-off water and a concrete apron was constructed to divert surface water away from the building.

In December 2015, NMSI and CSR project partner British Airways sponsored a festive Christmas Dinner at school for the children.

NMSI Sponsors Lusaka Youth Rugby Tournament

With NMSI’s Zambian office based in Lusaka, the in-country management decided to sponsor the Kondwani Dimitry Sakala Youth Rugby Tournament as part of its CSR programme. Held in April 2021, the tournament honoured the life of the late Kondwani Dimitry Sakala.

The KDS tournament brings together youth rugby teams from across the Lusaka region, many of which come from a low standard of living and do not have the funds or access to basic services. This tournament thereby provides a platform for local youths to showcase their talents to rugby union leaders, improving the lives of the less privileged youth within the local community. It also provides an opportunity for young Zambians to play rugby, who would not otherwise have access to equipment or facilities.

The Lions Rugby Club hosted seven different teams from across Lusaka, with a total of 145 male and female players present between the ages of 11-16, helping to promote rugby in Zambia. Thirteen games were played in total, with the Rhinos Rugby Club emerging victorious.

Lions Rugby Club official, Akim Kabemba, stated, “this tournament has been hugely beneficial to both the club and the community, bringing both male and female children together to showcase their talents in the game. We would like to thank NMSI for their sponsorship as it has really helped us as a club to put this tournament together as a great success.

NMSI Sponsored Clean Up in Lusaka

Together with The Bright Future Project (TBFP), NMSI sponsored a community-led clean-up day in Chongwe, Lusaka.

NMSI provided a contribution under its “Giving Back” programme which provided for the purchase of roofing sheets, gravel, heavy duty gloves, bin liners, trees and plants, all utilised by a team of community volunteers, including NMSI staff, who spent the day litter picking and cleaning up their local province. An array of plants and trees were also planted to freshen up the area in which numerous NMSI employees live and operate.

The day was a resounding success with The Royal Establishment of Chongwe thanking NMSI for their sponsorship of the project and expressing their gratitude and recognition of NMSI’s support in combatting environmental issues and assisting with the fight against climate change in the local community.
