President Commissions Level 1 Hospital in Zambia

On 22 August 2024, HE President Hakainde Hichilema officially commissioned the recently completed Chimwemwe Level One Hospital, an 80-bed state-of-the-art healthcare facility built by NMS in Kitwe District, Copperbelt Province.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, which was attended by the Acting British High Commissioner to Zambia, Sam Waldock, President Hichilema expressed his gratitude to the British government for its role in supporting the funding for the hospital. He acknowledged the UK’s longstanding support in Zambia’s health sector, noting that such partnerships are crucial in enhancing the quality of healthcare across the nation.

President Hichilema urged the local community to take ownership of the new facility, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding it against vandalism and theft. During a tour of the hospital, the President praised the maternity ward, highlighting the need for expansion of similar healthcare facilities nationwide. He called on Minister of Health, Elijah Muchima, to prioritize the development of additional maternity facilities to better serve the population.

Dr. Muchima emphasized that the construction of the Chimwemwe Level One Hospital is a clear demonstration of the government’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare services and enhancing well-being for its citizens.

The Acting High Commissioner spoke at the ceremony, highlighting the collaboration between NMS Infrastructure and the British Government in delivering the health facility. This partnership is a testament to the strong ties between Zambia and the UK, particularly in the realm of healthcare development.

The newly commissioned hospital will provide a comprehensive range of services, including out-patient and in-patient care, anti-retroviral therapy, maternity services, physiotherapy, dental care, ophthalmology, laboratory services, radiology with advanced CT scan machines, emergency units and surgery theatres.

Concluding the event, President Hichilema reiterated the government’s dedication to delivering services that improve the lives of all Zambians, with a particular focus on ensuring that high quality healthcare is accessible to all.
